Starting from March 2015 Coopera, in collaboration with colleagues from the cooperative The Footsteps, has been awarded the tender for the management of the two main Fortresses of Monte Argentario as well as the related ones Tourist Information Points.
There Spanish Fortress Of Porto Santo Stefano and the Fort Stella Of Porto Ercole, built between the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, are part of that marvellous system of fortifications created after the birth of the Royal State of Spanish Garrisons, a nucleus formed by the will of the King of Spain Philip II after the annexation of the Republic of Siena to the Duchy of Tuscany in 1557.
There Spanish Fortress dominates the historic center and defended the town of Porto Santo Stefano from frequent raids by Turkish pirates.
The building, now perfectly restored, houses two permanent exhibitions of considerable importance. The exhibition “Submerged Memories” contains the main findings of Underwater Archaeology with finds recovered in the waters of theGiannutri Island, in the'Giglio Island and along the coast of theArgentario.
Two further rooms house the small museum dedicated to the "Master Shipwrights“, the shipwrights who still today build wooden boats of extraordinary beauty.
The Fort Stella, located in the hills surrounding the village of Porto Ercole, is a wonderful example of fortified architecture from the early 17th century. Its unique star-shaped layout is nestled in a landscape and natural setting of rare beauty. The structure hosts various temporary exhibitions.
